Alien Skin Blow Up|Review

Blow up images? Are you kidding me, i dont need any enlargement after all my pictures are not going to be on road side advertisement! That’s the way I used to think, until i got myself an Epson 3880 Printer. Now whats printing got to do with blow ups. Well…read on.

I had taken this beautiful picture  in Oman of the Sultan Qaboos Mosque-(HDR tone-mapped). During the post work i had to crop some areas for a better composition.  My dilemma started when i started to print. I wanted a border less print that matched by paper size of 13×19 inches but i seem to get a white border around the print. Why does this happen? This happens when the Image Size is smaller(here in this case cropped) than the Canvas or Print Size.

I wanted to blow up or resize this photo it in such a way that i dont degrade the existing picture. So i set out for google. There were two choices for the blow up, the Alien Skin Blow up and  the OnOne software Perfect Resize 7 .  I had earlier installed the the trial version of OnOne Perfect Resize and the interface of this software was really really confusing so i had to try the Alien Blow Up 3.

As per the site of the Alien Skin, this software uses complicated algorithm for large enlargement sizes in such a way that the quality of the images does not degrade when compared to other resizing softwares. Thats is something that i am looking for.

So having downloaded the Alien Skin blow up to my mac, the installation of this software was quick and easy. Once the application is opened you would see the following screen as shown below.

I  selected the Resize option after all i don’t want to crop it any further. Further settings shows the paper size that you want and then select the sharpening for output as medium as you don’t want noise to add to the picture

As an example you can see the before and after sizes after i resized to 13×19 inch paper size for the above picture. There is 136% increase in size.

If you want your enlargements, then Blow Up 3 is the best option. From what I’ve seen myself, I certainly recommend it.  This is available for Adobe light room users also.

Swarovski Crystal|Dubai Product Photographer

This is my first shot for a product shoot for jewellery and hence there will be many flaws which i could like to hear from you guys. What inspired me is one of my good friend and photographer from facebook, Muthu Krishna is a excellent product photographer and he has been telling me about product photography and i suddenly thought, why not i try also and see how it works. I did not have any white board with me rather blue and hence the choice for the board. I dont really know how the composition is for this one, maybe you can leave you suggestion below.

Jewellery photography is very hard and you have to make sure that the colors that you get while post are what you see. The post should not make it look different in color else people will not buy it when they see that its not what they found in magazine.

I forgot to mention all the way, that i am a big fan of Swarovski. I fell in love with it when i was studying in UK and i got the first Jewel from them for my mom. This one was really attracted me while i was in Dubai Mall and that was it and i just got it for my wife. This was the first time i am seeing coloured version from Swarovski in necklace.

Let me talk about lighting and that is why i love this product shot. I remember Adam once asking me how i would light for a product photography. I said, lighting product is very difficult and you need to so many lights  and control them. If not, you would end up having  reflections from shiny subjects. If you see in the above picture, you can see in the beeds and in the crystals the reflection of the modifiers i used. This is important, just like in the portraits where the modifiers are in the eyes rather. I have shown below my setup of the lighting for this.

I had kept the blue board on my clothes drying stand;).On the right is my first light source i brought ( 160 watts) from backgroundsource.com kept at half power which acted as fill light while my Alien bees on right acted as Key Light.

Untitled|Dubai Fashion Photographer

When i shot this picture and showed it around, many of them asked me if i did photoshop to have that sun in the picture. Afraid Not, and until then i never knew you could simulate the similar effect in photoshop because i thought those who shoot it, shoot it and not photoshop it.

As you might know this is my first shoot for a fashion and my first ever experience with Strobe lights and just imagine when i got this shot  in my camera! I never imagined i could get in camera. This is what you need to learn. Control Lights. Only if you know how to control light you can get the desired effect. Its all about experimenting with light. If you have everything right in the camera in terms of lighting, you can do less miracles in photoshop, but if the lighting is bad, dont expect photoshop to rescue. The retouching for the above photo is  done by me and and you can also find many flaws here but i think for the start it was better.

Regarding the lighting for the above picture, there was one Large Softbox close to the subject. Yes, just one light was used for this effect. Sun was behind the subject and hence my second light. Ever since then i have used only one light in in my shot and it has been something that has always been in my photos.
