INTERVIEW WITH DAVID TOQUICA

Tell us a little about yourself.

Well I’m David Toquica, I’m 26 years old, born and raised in Bogotá Colombia. My mother is from Cartagena Colombia and my father is from Bogotá so this combination of cultures and ethnicities has had a strong impact on my life. I’m so passionate about life and every single thing I do “It’s all about learning”

Your current location: Bogotá, Colombia.

Why did you become a photographer/or take photography as your hobby?

This all starts when I got fired from my first job. I remember that I was working as a customer service representative and when I got fired I told myself I was not gonna be a customer service rep. all my life that’s why I decided to study Photography.

How long have you been into photography?

I’ve been doing photography for like two and a half years. I started out shooting analog but now it’s been a year and a half doing digital.

Did you go to school to study photography?

Well I did, but just for one-year basically analog photography.

How would you describe your style?

I don’t have a particular style because I like too many things about photography as you can see in flickr’s gallery but I always try to keep it fresh.

What’s the best part of being a photographer?

To me the best part of being a photographer is that you have the opportunity to express yourself through images.

When you had your first camera and how you felt when you had it.

Well my first camera was a Minolta, an analog camera, actually my father’s camera, then I bought a Nikon D90 and well my photos can tell how I felt by that time and how I feel nowadays.

What camera and gear you have now

I still have my Nikon d90 but hopefully I’ll upgrade to a D7000 soon, I also have two Speedlights a Nikon sb900 and a sb600, three different lenses a 18-105, a 50 m.m and a 10.5 m.m

What is your favourite subject in photography? (Macro/landscape/Potrait…)

Most of the times I shoot models.

How do you keep yourself motivated and your photography fresh?

I consider myself as a big dreamer so that keeps myself motivated all the time. Also music, internet you know and fashion concepts keep my style fresh.

Can you describe how and when you use flash, video light, reflectors and natural light during your shoot.

It’s kind of hard to describe how and when I use a flash because It depends on concept, sometimes I use them sometimes not.

Have you had anything go wrong at as shoot and if so, how did you handle it.

I have, and I think the best way to handle it is improvising, letting your mind fly a little. Works for me.

What is your favorite piece of photo equipment?

I love my 50 mm lens

What is your favorite lighting setup?

Hm I never do a lightning twice, since I always try to “motivate” the light by binding it with the environment or background. So my favorite lighting would only be an applicable term when the background is the same.

Do you prefer studio or location sessions?

I rather locations without a doubt.

The first photographer that comes to mind and why

A lot of photographers come to my mind in this moment but right now Scott Reha why? Because I would love to shoot underwater, I mean his work underwater is unbelievable

Who or what inspires you in your personal life and work?

Music inspires me a lot in both but nothing inspires me more than doing things that I love to do and even better when you receive positive comments and support.

Is there something you would have done differently during your photographic career?

To be quite honest I don’t think so, I love photography and everything about it

What is your most used Photoshop tool, plug-in, action set etc…

I don’t know that depends on the image and the concept you have and in sport photography I just turn down the exposure since I shoot my digital files a little bright.

How important is Photoshop (post processing) in your final images?

In fashion photography I think it’s quite important since you have the chance to change a few thing that might improve the image quality.

What piece of equipment would you most like to get but don’t have yet?

Well I’d love to have a bunch of lenses and more equipment to play but now I would love to have a nikkor 70-200 2.8 and another body camera like a Nikon D3s.

What other photograpers do you like?

I like Scott Rhea, David Lachapelle, Jhon Rankin, lara Jade.

Something you’re still learning?

Every time there’s something new to learn as I said before “It’s all about to learn”

What is your idea of perfect happiness.

To me happiness doesn’t exist only agreeable moments

Are you a Mac or PC lover?

I’m a mac lover without a doubt

The last workshop or seminar you attended and why.

I haven’t been to one yet because I haven’t had the chance

INTERVIEW WITH DARRYL ESPIRITU

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a B.S Diagnostic Radiographer by profession and freelance photographer / serious hobbyist.

Your current location:  Abu Dhabi U.A.E

Why did you become a photographer/or take photography as your hobby?

During college days I had a subject regarding basic photography and was enjoying it but I didn’t have the budget to buy one back then. On Oct. 2009, I decided to get an entry level DSLR Nikon D3000 to relieve stress of being away from home, to do something productive with my spare time and I was happy ever since. Maybe the right word is addicted to photography.

How long have you been into photography?

I started photography since 0ct 2009 up to present.

Did you go to school to study photography?

I just read books about photography and go out to practice what I have learned.

How would you describe your style?

Mostly basic … I just apply what I’ve learned in reading books and the things that I learned from workshops that I have attended…most of my photos I rely on quality of ambient light and I love to experiment with highlights and shadows. Some of my friends tell me that I am good in enhancing colors.

What’s the best part of being a photographer?

It allows me to document and appreciate everything. That is around me which I don’t give time to notice before.  It develops discipline and allows me to tap in the creativity part of my mind.

When you had your first camera and how you felt when you had it.

I got my Nikon D3000 last Oct. 2009. It was the best feeling ever because taking photos for me is therapeutic. It takes away stress..

What camera and gear you have now

Camera: I own a Nikon D300s and Nikon D700.

Lenses. Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8, 80-200 mm f/2.8, 17-35mm f/2.8, 85mm f1/.4, 50mm f /1.8 , 105mm f /2.8,  16mm f/2.8 fish eye

Gears and Accessories : 2pcs pocket wizard flextt5, 1 pc. Pocket wizard mini tt1, 2 pcs SB 900 and 1 comer LED light CMLBPS1800 . 2pcs.MBD10 battery grip.

What is your favourite subject in photography? (Macro/landscape/Potrait…)

I go for Portraiture, wildlife; especially Bird photography but still saving up for the right lens for it. Macro, photojournalism , fashion Photography, etc.…and basically trying to learn every form of photography in order to master the Craft.

Describe how you shoot your favourite subject (Lens/ Lighting/accessories)

I love bird photography mostly I rely on the quality of light. It is also challenging because I still have to do some research for a certain type of bird that I want to capture through my lens and observe them on how they go about with their daily routine. And wait for the right time to take the shot. Sometimes I spend hrs. Just waiting, but it is really fulfilling especially when I go home with a great shot. I only use a Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 that’s why I have to tight crop all of my shots. The main reason why I stopped for now. And went into portraiture and fashion photography because I don’t have the right lens yet for birding.

For Portraiture I’m always fascinated with the eyes on how it catches the light and I challenge my-self on how to make an artistic approach in my composition.

I also look for emotions and drama of light.

What do you feel is the most challenging thing about photographing your subject:

The challenging part for me is on how to turn an ordinary scene into an extra ordinary one.  Its on how I make my subject the center of a viewer’s attention.

What is your worst photo experience?

During one of my clients photo-shoot when I accidentally damaged one of my lenses .At first, I had this feeling to just go and leave because I could not take good pictures anymore but I stopped and took a deep breath and told  myself; accept it and be a professional and finish the client photo-shoot and that’s what I basically did.

How do you keep yourself motivated and your photography fresh?

I always have the hunger to read more and take notes and watch everything that I could find about photography.

Can you describe how and when you use flash, video light, reflectors and natural light during your shoot?

I rely mostly on ambient light. The video light, flash, and reflectors I only use them for fill light.

Have you had anything go wrong at as shoot and if so, how did you handle it.

In my experience I sometimes tend to break something in my gear . How do I handle it? It’s just a matter of acceptance but now I am 4 times careful as before because equipment are not cheap.

What is your favorite piece of photo equipment?

For portraits my 85mm 1.4 it’s tack sharp and the bokeh is superb and very reliable in low light situation. For events and daily photography I’d go for my Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 because it covers all of my shooting needs.

What is your favorite lighting setup?

One light set-up

Do you prefer studio or location sessions?

Anything will do. But its much fun on location because I can play around and experiment with ambient light.

What is your dream assignment?

Shoot for National Geographic

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?

nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8

Because it covers all of my shooting needs.

We know that each of us has someone or something, which inspires our life and work. Can you tell us the true basis of your inspiration?

What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?

Comer  LED light CMLBPS1800

What is your most treasured possession?

The photos that I captured are the most treasured possession I have. Knowing that I documented an event or moment that only comes once in a lifetime. It is indeed fulfilling.

Who or what inspires you in your personal life and work?

My wife. For her continued full support on my hobby and believing that I could do best with my passion in photography.

Is there something you would have done differently during your photographic career?

No regrets. It’s an expensive hobby I know, but it’s really rewarding especially when I got that quality shot at the end of the day.

What is your most used Photoshop tool, plug-in, action set etc…

I always tweak with levels and curves for fine-tuning my photos because it gives a bit of a punch in contrast. I also use Imagenomic portraiture for my Portraits and Wacom tablet.

How important is Photoshop (post processing) in your final images?

It is important in the sense of fine tuning an image but still, you have to do it right first in your Camera with the proper technical factors so you wont spend much time in Photoshop.

Describe your Photoshop technique that you use.

I shoot in raw format after doing most of my adjustments in camera raw. I do my final touches on CS5.
